Saving Lives with the SUU Blood Drive
26 September 2018, Cedar City Utah.
Students on SUU Campus were given the opportunity to donate blood to provide life saving services to patients with cancer, physical trauma or chronic diseases. On April 6th, 2018 members of the SUU nursing program hosted a blood drive led by student Caitlin Keetch. With the help of the Red Cross they were able assist over 40 people to provide lifesaving blood to those in need.
Nursing student met in the rotunda on SUU campus to recruit individuals to donate blood, gathering contact information and getting written commitment to donate. Then the nursing students contacted each individual the day of to ensure donation. The Red Cross provided the necessary equipment and professional to carry out the donations. The blood donated could help to improve and save the lives of over 120 people!
Caitlin Handy, director of the event, is a nursing student at Southern Utah University and carried out the event as part of the experiential education program known as EDGE at the university. The idea of the EDGE program is to provide students with real world experience while still in school to facilitate post graduation employment or enrollment in graduate programs.
